New Zealand Ski Vacations

People that go on New Zealand ski vacations have a vast variety of great ski areas at their disposal. Their choices range from  the larger New Zealand ski resorts to smaller and more intimate club areas.  Some ski areas cater to the family crowd with special amenities for children and others stake out their claim to the more advanced and adult skiers.

Where to Go In New Zealand If You're On a Tight Budget

Snow skiing is one of the most popular winter sports in the world and a New Zealand ski vacation resort is one of the most popular destinations in the southern hemisphere among avid skiers.  Queenstown and Wanaca are the most frequented ski destinations; however, for the skier on a tight budget, the more remote locations of Mount Potts Backcountry and Temple Basin ski area are becoming more popular. Also, from a timing standpoint, the best time to take a New Zealand ski vacation is during early July through early October when the ski season is at its peak.

What is the New Zealand Ambience Like?

When taking a New Zealand ski vacation you will find that most of the slopes are geared towards the downhill skier.  You will also find that most slopes do not house huge resorts and most skiers commute from outside little towns. They also tend to purchase or rent their ski equipment from shops located outside of town.  During peak times the lines can get really long and small groups have the option of taking a helicopter up to remote mountain areas to ski all by themselves.

For those skiers who prefer the commercial resorts, the country has several on its north and south islands.  There are also private ski lodges located on the southern side of the mountains that require four wheel drive vehicles to get to, as well as some areas that require walking to get to because the terrain is too rough for vehicles.  Another type of skiing that entices people to go to New Zealand on a ski vacation is the heli-skiing and the glacier skiing.  However, in order to experience these types of New Zealand skiing, you must be at least an intermediate skier and have experience skiing on powder.

Other Things to Do in New Zealand While on Your Ski Vacation

New Zealand ski vacations do not only have great skiing, but they also have great scenery.  While you may be taking your vacation in New Zealand to primarily ski, do not pass up the opportunity to take a helicopter tour of the beautiful snow covered mountains.  These tours offer the opportunities to stop off and get in some snowboarding as well.  The New Zealand snow safety institute is another place every vacationer must go.  Here you will find courses on skiing and snowboarding, as well as courses on how to survive an avalanche or how to survive if you should ever get stuck on a snowy mountain.
